Salon 89 opens in Jamestown
After 12 years as either an employee or renting booth space at other salons, Janelle Emo said she was ready for her own business.
Salon 89 opened Monday at 714 1st Ave S. in Jamestown. The salon is sharing space with Style and Dezine Boutique, which is owned and operated by Emo's mother, Nancy Jangula.
"I think that our businesses are going to very much complete each other," Emo said.
Boutique shoppers often mingle with staff and with one another, which is why there are light refreshments and chairs, she said. While browsing women's fashion and accessories, jewelry and boutique food imports, the salon is also right there for people to schedule a haircut, perm, coloring, facial waxing or to purchase professional hair and nail products, she said.
Other services including nails will be added in the coming months, she said.
The boutique location presented an opportunity to open a business in a busy downtown area, Emo said. Converting the space meant having to put in plumbing and a lot of interior work but the result was worth it, she said.
"It feels surreal and definitely turned out the way I imagined it would," Emo said. "We are just giving Jamestown something different. We don't have another boutique and salon in the same space."
The cozy salon design is to provide a relaxing and fun environment where clients feel pampered, Emo said. There is room to expand down the road if needed, she said.
"This is on a bigger scale than renting a booth in another salon," she said.
Emo said she most recently rented booth space for two years at Face To Face For Wellness. She in turn has booths available for rent to other cosmetologists, she said.
Emo is married to Jacob Emo and has one son, Graham, 11 months. She gave Salon 89 its name from her birth year, 1989.
