Describing something you remember from the previous growing season as a “large purple posy” or “striped red tomato” just doesn’t get it when you’re wandering among the hundreds of plant trays at your nearest nursery.

05/09/2008 12:00 AM If play is the best way for young children to learn, then children involved in the Stepping Stones program can expect a head start on their education.
Stepping Stones, a drop-in early childhood play center for families, will give children from birth to kindergarten-age a chance to play with each other as well as their parents. The center — which is expected to open this fall — will also give parents networking opportunities and the tools they need to be good parents, said Sarah McDermid, Christian education director at Trinity Lutheran Church.

05/08/2008 12:00 AM A new interpretive center at the Chateau de Mores State Historic Site in Medora opened to the public April 25.
The new $2 million facility has been under construction since April 2006. The 8,600-square-foot facility includes a 2,000-square-foot permanent gallery and a 1,000-square-foot temporary gal-lery.
The new interpretive center will remain open year round, with a schedule adjustment during the winter months when the rest of the Chateau de Mores State Historic Site is closed.

The price is $6 for adults and $4 for students and preschool. This includes admission into the JHS Varsity game at 1 p.m. that day at Jack Brown Stadium.

Carolyn Murray-Slutsky, an occupational therapist, and Betty Paris, a physical therapist, are recognized around the world as experts in intervention strategies for those with developmental delays. They will present “Autism and Pervasive Developmental Delay: Intervention Strategies” at Jamestown College.

05/07/2008 12:00 AM The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team is offering a grief support group for anyone who is grieving the loss of someone important to them, whether the loss is recent or from years past. The group will meet at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church beginning May 14 and will run for six weeks.
In his book, “Understanding Your Grief,” internationally recognized expert in the field of loss and grief, Dr. Alan Wolfelt says, “You can benefit from a connectedness that comes from people who have also had a death in their lives. Support groups, where people come together and share the common bond of experience, can be invaluable in helping you and your grief and supporting your need to mourn long after the event of the death”

05/07/2008 12:00 AM Garrison Diversion’s Recreation Committee awarded close to $104,000 in matching recreation grants at its semi-annual meeting on April 29. The committee approved 15 projects including walking trails, playground equipment, picnic shelters and boat ramps.

05/07/2008 12:00 AM In the first four months of 2008, the Bush Foundation has made grant payments totaling $11.35 million to 113 nonprofit organizations located in or doing work that benefits the foundation’s region of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. These payments include more than $1.4 million to benefit South Dakota, nearly $1.9 million in North Dakota and $2.1 million focused specifically on Greater Minnesota.

In recognition of AARP’s 50th anniversary, AARP has introduced “50 Ways to Make a Difference” for this year’s Day of Service.
In North Dakota, approximately 190 people will participate in 10 communities: Bismarck, Finley-Sharon, Harvey, Mandan, Mayville, Minot, Rhame, Rolla, Valley City and Williston.

05/07/2008 12:00 AM The challenge was to come up with an idea that can transform public education, particularly in poor communities. The winner: an educator with a passion for making school fun.
Michael Bitz won a national competition with his idea for helping students learn academic subjects while creating their own record labels.
Now, he’ll try to bring that idea to schools across the country as the first recipient of a fellowship awarded this week through the Mind Trust, an Indianapolis nonprofit. The group’s stated goal is to encourage entrepreneurial solutions to problems in U.S. schools.

The society recognizes top scholars and invites those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. The announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes.

Nathan Peine, a junior from Hampton, Minn., was elected president of the state PBL organization for 2008-09. Cody Roland, a sophomore from Crosby, N.D., was elected state vice president for finance and membership development. Jenna Tews, a junior from Morgan, Minn., was appointed vice president of operations.

Matt Kopp is the first chair section leader of the JMS 8th grade trumpet section. He is also a member of the JMS Jazz Band. Norman grew up at Monango, N.D., and attended Valley City (N.D.) State University. He worked in Aberdeen, S.D., before moving to Jamestown in 1982. Norman and his wife, Jane, own Great Stories Book Shoppe in downtown James-town next to Babb’s Coffee House.

05/05/2008 12:00 AM Devastating, unbelievable, unforgettable — the words do not adequately describe the decade of the 1930s. It was a time when poor economic conditions combined with extreme weather that created a period of prairie history known as the Great Depression or the “Dirty Thirties.”
Immediately following World War I — when a hungry world demanded more food — North Dakota farmers joined the effort and expanded production. They joined the call to feed the people of western Europe.
Credit was easy and available. Bank regulation was light. Wheat was selling for $2.95 on Minneapolis markets.

The tour that starts June 16 will take riders around the northern part of the Red River Valley in five days, including a loop into Canada for half a day.

Opp Construction LLC of Grand Forks is suing West Fargo in state court. The city denies the company’s allegations.

05/03/2008 12:00 AM MDU Resources Group, Inc., says its first-quarter profit reflects record gains in oil and natural gas production and other energy-related operations that more than offset slower construction business.
Bismarck-based MDU said it earned $71.7 million, or 39 cents per share, during the first three months of the year, compared with $46.7 million, or 25 cents per share, during the same period a year earlier.

Kum & Go spokeswoman Sara Wille said the chain has 15 stores in North Dakota. She said 13 are owned by Kum & Go and two are owned by Cenex and managed by Kum & Go.

05/03/2008 12:00 AM Fire officials say a grass fire near Manvel forced the evacuation of about 30 homes and burned about 1,000 acres. No one was hurt.
Manvel Fire Chief Steve Schumer says residents were allowed to return home about 7:30 p.m. He says the fire came within yards of some of the homes.

Officials in Spearfish, Belle Fourche and Butte County declared snow emergencies. All roads were closed to travel except for emergency vehicles.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. said that an area resembling New York’s Central Park will be featured in the center of its Project Genesis ship when it is delivered in late 2009 as the world’s largest cruise vessel.
Spanning the length of a football field, Central Park will include lush foliage, quiet walkways, restaurants, boutiques, an art gallery and a moving bar, the world’s No. 2 cruise operator said.

Kennedy is public relations director at Jamestown Hospital and is involved with the National Arts Foundation.

04/29/2008 12:00 AM Don Bentz introduced Sandy Franke and Leonard Willey, who spoke and showed pictures about Ecuador at the Kiwanis noon luncheon meeting April 21 at the Lantern Room. Franke, Willey and 10 other adults from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Jamestown participated in Mission Ecuador in February.

04/29/2008 12:00 AM The Jamestown Lions Club met April 23. Presiding was Vice President Dwaine Heinrich. Secretary Don Jan led in the Pledge of Allegiance and song leader Jim Lunde led in song followed by prayer by Ed Anderson.

04/28/2008 12:00 AM The Jamestown Library Association was incorporated on Jan. 20 by W. M. Lloyd, Jr., W.W. Dudley, R. Rose, J.A. Atkinson, J.W. Cloes and C.H. Clemmer. This association had rooms over Churchill and Webster’s store, later the Kirk and Allen Company. The reading room was open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
