Janna Bergstedt introduced speaker Jim Ruether at the Kiwanis Club noon luncheon on Nov. 18 at the Legacy Living Center.

Ruether has been with the Jamestown Fire Department for 25 years. He started as a volunteer and is currently in his fifth year as the fire chief. Ruether spoke about the increase in demand on the fire department, as the number of rescue calls has doubled, and the continuous need for volunteers. There are currently 36 employees, five full time and 31 volunteers. Positions are still open for volunteer firefighters.

Reuther said the Jamestown Fire Department has four divisions: dive-water rescue team, hazardous material team, rescue squad and the fire squad. Members meet every second and third Monday for training and have department meetings every fourth Monday.

Bergstedt led the meeting attended by 24 members. Con Caine led the group singing and was accompanied by Sharon Caine on the piano. Don Bentz collected “Happy Dollars” for The Salvation Army.

New members Dick and Jan Seekins, co-owners/operators of StarLite Motel, were inducted into the Jamestown Kiwanis Club by Bergstedt. They were sponsored by Joyce Bentz.

Member Becca Spenningsby will introduce the speaker at the Dec. 2 Kiwanis meeting at the Legacy Living Center.
