JHS speech team season starts
The Jamestown High School speech team traveled to Valley City on Saturday for its first meet of the season. Jessica Vandal, a junior, placed seventh in storytelling, and Hunter Carpenter, also a junior, placed sixth in the same event. Carpenter also placed fifth with his speech to entertain.
Elise Opp and Emily Lauinger, both sophomores, placed in dramatic speaking; Lauinger finishing eighth and Opp fifth. Lauinger also finished third in extemporaneous programmed reading.
Kelsey Becker, a junior, placed sixth with her speech to persuade and finished second in extemporaneous speaking, which qualified her for the state meet. Kassi Manley, a freshman, finished seventh in impromptu speaking. Seniors Libby Kruse and Morgan Baumgartner placed fifth with their serious duo. Baumgartner also finished fourth in impromptu speaking. She also won both poetry and serious prose, qualifying her for the state meet in both of those events.
The team placed third out of 13 teams. The team travels to Linton High School for a meet on Saturday and to Devils Lake on Feb. 1.
