Mary’s Place topic at Kiwanis
Jamestown Kiwanis Club member Janna Bergstedt introduced speaker Lynne Tally at the Sept. 27 Kiwanis meeting.
Tally is the executive director for Safe Shelter in Jamestown and has been with the organization for 36 years. Safe Shelter provides advocacy, intervention, prevention and other services for victims and has been serving Stutsman and Foster counties since 1980.
Tally shared information about a new facility that Safe Shelter is planning on building called Mary’s Place at Safe Shelter. Mary’s Place will have two one-bedroom apartments, one two-bedroom apartment, three garages and administrative offices.
“The goal is to get them back home, but there are instances that it’s not possible,” Tally said. “Mary’s Place meets a need.”
In 2015, Safe Shelter provided 1,782 services for 139 survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Safe Shelter’s support hotline is 1-888-353-7233. More information can be found at www.safeshelterjamestown.org.
President Amanda Thrift led the regular meeting attended by 35 members. Don Caine led group singing accompanied by Sharon Caine.
Bergstedt collected “Happy Dollars” for Kids Against Hunger, an annual meal-packaging event hosted by the Kiwanis Club. This year’s event will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, at Stutsman Harley-Davidson in Jamestown. Donations and volunteers are needed to help pack more than 150,000 meals.
