A Brampton, N.D., man is in custody after allegedly killing a pedestrian in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday in rural Sargent County, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The patrol said a possible vehicle/pedestrian crash involving a 1998 Ford Ranger occurred at 3 a.m. Sunday on a gravel county road in 4 miles south of N.D. Highway 11. The victim, a 28-year-old male, was taken to Oakes (N.D.) Hospital by a private party at about 5 a.m. and pronounced dead a short time later.

The patrol said the accused driver, Dakota Sutton, 22, Brampton, is in custody at the Barnes County Jail and is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

The Ford sustained damage to its undercarriage.

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Sargent County Sheriff's Office and Oakes Police Department assisted with the investigation, which is ongoing.

The patrol said the victim's name will be released Monday afternoon.
