Athletes earn Optimist honors

Five area athletes were named athlete of the week by the Optimist Club.

Jamestown High School’s Eathan Gumke and Riley Thom were co-winners, as the former won a state title at 195 at the Class A state wrestling meet on Saturday. The latter won the diving competition at a Mandan meet.

Blue Jay gymnast Hannah Schiele had career best scores at the Jamestown Invite, scoring a 34.35 for sixth in the all-around.

University of Jamestown guard Taylor Newton hit six 3-pointers for a 29-point night, helping his team to its ninth straight victory.

The University of Jamestown’s Aleona Reyes ran the 1,000 meter in 3:01.42 to break the record at Shelly Ellig indoor training facility on the campus of North Dakota State. Her time was also a national-qualifying mark.
