Attempt to thaw pipes may have tainted water
TIOGA, N.D. — The North Dakota Department of Health has experts in Tioga because chemicals used to thaw frozen pipes in an apartment complex may have gotten in the water system.
Tioga officials were told Thursday that chemicals, possibly including antifreeze, may have been introduced into an apartment complex’s water system to thaw water lines, the North Dakota Department of Health said Friday.
City officials disconnected the water to the complex and are flushing that portion of the system. The compromised area is without water, but the rest of the city’s water system is safe and operational, the health department said.
The health department has experts assisting Tioga with water testing to ensure the water is safe before the supply is reconnected.
Twenty residents of the complex have been notified, but it’s unknown if they consumed any chemicals. The residents were advised to seek testing for possible chemical poisoning.
