Bernard 'Bernie' Francis Huss

Bernard Bernie Francis Huss, 88, Alexandria, MN, formerly of Sykeston and Devils Lake, passed away Monday, February 10, 2014 surrounded by his family at the Knute Nelson Care Center in Alexandria.

Bernie was born January 2, 1926 to the late Elizabeth (Hafner) Huss and Michael Huss in Dover, ND. He graduated from Sykeston High School in 1944, attended Santa Barbara Community College and Moler Barber School. Bernie was a World War II veteran, serving our country in the United States Navy stationed in Hawaii, the Naval Reserves and the Army National Guard, retiring after 26 years of service. He was a farmer, Standard Oil Agent, Oliver Farm Implement Dealer, Milbank Insurance Agent, United States Department of Agriculture Supervisor Enumerator, Barber and United States Postal Carrier.

On June 3, 1947 he married Grace Baumann in Fessenden, ND. They briefly resided in Bowdon and Harvey before returning to Sykeston in 1949 and resided there until 2005. Their first born children, John Michael and Joseph Lewis Huss were born three months prematurely and died on December 25, 1947. They were followed by Connie (Marlin) Haluska of McAllen,TX, Bernie (Bea) Huss Jr. of Punta Gorda, FL, Kevin (Debbie) Huss of Appleton, WI, Nancy (Marty) Koenig of Jamestown, ND, Michelle (Lee) Moen of Ballwin, MO and Gregory (Tammy) Huss of Alexandria, MN.

Bernie lived a life of service to his family, church, country and local community. He served the city of Sykeston as Mayor and Alderman and took on many projects to improve the city of Sykeston. Bernie was very proud of his hometown. He had a heart of gold which was evidenced by his numerous random acts of kindness and helpfulness to those in need.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Grace; their six children; his 20 grandchildren, Carissa Haluska, Becky (Duke) Haluska, Marni (Robert) Saenz, Nicole (Kevin) Forest, Sadie (Jon) Erickson, Joey (Donnie) Amerman, Tracy (Karla) Koenig, Christopher (Mariam) Huss, Jeremy (Katie) Huss, Kimberly (Rob) Johnson, Alexander 'Alec' (Mary Frances 'Frannie') Moen, Brett, Andrew, Sean and Michael Moen and Michael, Nathan, Leah, Noah and Nicholas Huss; along with his 15 great-grandchildren, Dane, Rhys, Quin, Cipriana, Mykaela, Jace, Steven, Katie, Kaylee, Karter, Abby, Kennen, Colby, Liv and Hadley; his brothers, Edwin and Robert Huss; and sisters, Catherine Kutz, Sally Wescomb and Pauline Riseberg.

He was preceded in death by his sons, John Michael and Joseph Lewis; his parents; two brothers, Leo and Raymond Huss and a sister, Anne Marie (Huss) Lundby.

Funeral: Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 at 10:30 am at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Sykeston

Visitation: Sunday, 5 pm to 7 pm at the church

Prayer service: Sunday ay 7 pm at the church

Burial: Hillside Cemetery in Fessenden

Memorial Service: Tuesday, February 18, at 1:30 p.m. at the Knute Nelson Care Center in Alexandria.
