The holidays are just around the corner, which means it’s time to deliver the gifts for our loved ones that we planned for and purchased months ago.

Or — you’re scrambling to come up with gift ideas because the holidays snuck up on you like they seem to for me every year. If you’re looking for a last-minute, inexpensive idea, try making your own beverage mixes! Everyone likes a hot beverage on a cold day, so this easy but thoughtful homemade gift can be given to anyone on your list. Place some mixes in a basket with a holiday mug, and your gift is complete. Here are some tips for preparing your beverage mixes for gift giving.

* For best quality and ease of use, store the mixes in an airtight container with a wide mouth. See-through canisters and canning jars are great options. You can decorate the jars with a cloth or ribbon to make them more festive.

* To decorate canning jars with a cloth, you will need about one-quarter yard of fabric. Cut a circle in the fabric so that it hangs down about two inches from the top of the jar. You can place the fabric under or over the band. Tie with a ribbon, holding the fabric in place with a rubber band, if needed.

* Be sure to provide preparation instructions with the beverage mixes so your gift recipient knows how much to mix into his or her mug!

You can get creative with making drink mixes, but if you’re not sure where to start, there are plenty of recipes out there to choose from. At the extension office, you can get the recipes for Double Chocolate Peppermint Candy Hot Cocoa mix, Spiced Tea mix, French Vanilla Coffee mix and Mint Candy Coffee mix.
