Big three shine: Bennion among leaders; Kasper, Bismarck in front

Jamestown coach Dean Kraft said he felt there were three girls ahead of the pack this year in Class A golf.

On Friday, it definitely showed.

Bismarck’s Katie Kasper carded a 73, holding a three-shot lead over Jamestown’s Sierra Bennion and Davies’ Jennifer Marsh during first day’s action of the East-West Classic at the Jamestown Country Club.

Wahpeton’s Savonnah Haselhorst and Minot’s Paige Argent are tied for fourth with an 86, 10 strokes behind the top three.

“There’s some big separation – they’re definitely the three to beat,” Kraft said.

Kasper’s score put the Demons out front, carding a 355. Century doesn’t have a golfer in the top six of the individual competition, but used balance to shoot a 358 and is in second. Davies is in third (365), while Jamestown (374) sits two strokes ahead of Minot for fourth.

Kraft said Bennion, a two-time all-state selection, played a better second nine, which led to a good score.

“She played a little nervous to start the round,” Kraft said. “I thought she really steadied herself.”

Bennion finished up her first nine by recording a bogey on No. 9, not bad considering she hit her tee shot out of bounds and had to take the penalty. On No. 13, she made a 40-foot par-saving putt.

“She’s definitely more mature this year,” Kraft said. “She looked like a mature golfer, like she belongs where she’s at. (Friday) and today are pretty big for her to get her started on the right track.”

Sarah Azure finished with a 95, which was around her average last season. Kaitlin Mullowney (100) and Mara LeFevre (103) also had their scores used.

“That’s a little high for her,” Kraft said of Azure. “Those three are kind of key on how we’re gonna do as a team this year. They’ve got to be able to get their scores down a little bit.”

Savannah Kramlich (115) and Emily Reiten (116) rounded out the Blue Jays’ scorers. Play continues at 8 a.m. today.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we shoot better (today),” Kraft said. “I think we’ll play more relaxed.”
