BISMARCK (AP) — Residents who live near the Missouri River in Bismarck are worried they will have to pick up the state’s share of a new levee.

The state Legislature has approved $350,000 to go toward the $1.3 million project, but the state Water Commission has said it will not finalize the funding until after residents vote on a special assessment tax.

The Bismarck Tribune reported that the property owners would pay an average of nearly $6,300 in taxes over 15 years if the state does not kick in the money. Otherwise each owner would pay about $2,700 per lot.

Resident Brian Senger said he wants to see the state’s numbers before the vote, which will be conducted by mail in January.
