Kyle Schumacher had a good start to his season on Saturday.

Jamestown’s lead runner finished second behind Dickinson all-stater Jackson Binstock with a time of 18 minutes, 36 seconds at the Orr-iginals Invite at Pipestem Reservoir.

“We knew he was in pretty good shape,” Jamestown coach Ken Gardner said. “He was ready to get rolling with some competition, and he did get some.”

Binstock trumped the field, finishing with a 17:31 and beating the pack by more than a minute. Schumacher finished 16 seconds ahead of Class B all-state runner Elliott Stone of Shiloh.

“For (Kyle) to be mixing it up with them — he’s in good company,” Gardner said. “

Jamestown’s boys finished third overall with a score of 100. Dickinson’s 47 edged Minot (67) for the title.

The Blue Jays had another top-20 runner in senior Hunter Braunberger, who finished 18th with a 21:19. Freshmen Leo Fremgen was right outside, taking 21st with a 21:40.

Medina made a splash as well, finishing sixth with a 166. Nick Thomas ran a 19:20 for fifth place overall, and teammate Landon Krapp’s 21:13 placed him 17th.

The top three teams were the same in the girls’ competition. Dickinson’s 82 beat Minot by two points, while the Blue Jays were third with a 98, just beating Killdeer (99).

Freshman Teralyn Coombs led Jamestown with an 18:30, good for 11th. Ligia Schulz (18:33) was 14th and Lindi Chadwick (18:44) finished 20th for the Blue Jays, who had six runners within 55 seconds of each other.

“That’s kind of a nice goal for the team,” Gardner said. “They’re right there. At any given meet, we could have a shake-up in the top five. We’ve just got to keep working and move those times down.”

Peyton Forlek’s 16:30 was the winning time, beating Kate Fox of Southern McLean by three seconds. Dickinson’s Liz Yoder was three seconds behind Fox for third.

Jamestown intends on participating in a meet hosted by Valley City State on Friday.
