Blue Jays fare better, finish fifth

Jamestown didn’t have any standout performances at the state gymnastics meet on Friday night in Bismarck, but it was disappointed, either.

The Blue Jays entered with the fifth-best average in the state, and that’s right where they finished. They scored a 136.517, edging out Valley City (136.050) for the first time this season.

“We hadn’t beaten them this year, so that was kind of good,” Jamestown coach Dave Tews said. “They’re a good team, no doubt. We were just a little better.”

Dickinson won its second straight state title, scoring a 146.733 to beat Minot (145.933). Bismarck Century (141.600) and Bismarck High (140.117) were third and fourth.

The state individual meet is today.

Tews said he was proud of the performance after his team struggled at the West Region meet last week.

“We had a much better meet,” Tews said, “but so did the two Bismarcks. We ended up where we were seeded. We can’t complain about that.”

The West Region flexed its muscles, taking the top five spots. Valley City, the East Region champion, had the best score of all east teams.

Jamestown had just one top-eight finisher in Erin Hillerud, who was eighth in the floor-exercise competition with a score of 9.333. She was also ninth on bars (8.633), 16th on vault (8.197) and 23rd on the balance beam (8.433) to finish 14th in the all-around (35.317). She was the only all-around performer for the Blue Jays.

“She’s been very solid all year and she had a good meet,” Tews said. “That last rotation when we watched Dickinson and Minot on floor, Erin was right in the mix. That was really good.”

Tews said he was pleased with Madison Mandan, who used a harder routine and had one of her better days on vault with an 8.717.

“It’s only the second time she’s done that vault,” Tews said. “You roll the dice, and it worked out well for us there. It’s not her season-best, but for her to be our second best vaulter, that’s absolutely good.”

Action continues at 1 p.m., today.
