Eathan Gumke has one match remaining in his high school career, and it likely means everything to him.
The Jamestown High School senior secured a spot in the 195-pound finals by pinning Fargo Davies’ Nick Kjera in 5 minutes, 50 seconds at the Class A state wrestling tournament at the Bismarck Civic Center.
“It is exciting to be in the finals,” Gumke said. “I dreamed about it and now I have one match to go.”
Gumke has an unfamiliar opponent in today’s finals, which start at 3 p.m. He meets West Fargo senior Tanner Kuznia.
“He is going to be tough,” Gumke said. “He is a really good athlete. I have not wrestled him before, which is sometimes a good thing because he doesn’t know what you are going to do, but at the same time I do not know what he is going to bring either. It is a double-edged sword.”
Gumke improved his record to 37-5 with the semifinal victory. He has the chance to be Jamestown’s first titlist since Zane Braun in 2012.
