Blue Jays, Jimmies drop duals on the road
Valley City’s senior-laden lineup was too strong for the Blue Jays Friday night.
Despite the loss, JHS coach Larry Eslick saw plenty of positives.
“We knew going in it was going to be tough. Valley City has a nice team,” Eslick said. “But for the most part I thought the kids wrestled pretty tough. I was happy with the effort.”
It was an uphill climb from the start for the Blue Jays, with three early forfeits, but they had a few highlights along the way. Most notably from sophomores Jakob Browning and Lucas Shirley back-to-back at 145 and 152.
Browning had his way with Christian Swenson before it hit the 15-point spread and was called at the 5-minute, 19-second mark.
Shirley was trailing Masyn Olson, but caught Olson on his back in the second period and finished the pin at 2:26.
“Those were two really nice wins for Jakob and Lucas against older guys,” Eslick said.
Caleb Ellingson and Eathan Gumke turned in typical performances.
Ellingson piled up a 13-1 win over Mason Bjornson at 170, while Gumke, ranked No. 1 at 295, blanked Dustin Lindgren, 5-0.
At 138, second-ranked Reed Beckman scored two points in the waning seconds to edge Paxton Mewes 4-2 in a marquee match-up.
Friday’s dual was the final of the regular season for the Blue Jays, who begin prepping for the West Region meet Feb. 8 in Dickinson.
“We have to have a good week of preparation,” Eslick said. “Now is the time we want to be peaking and get as many guys qualified for state as we can.”
Red Raiders edge Jimmies
The Jimmies piled up three pins on Friday in Orange City, Iowa but still fell a point short against Northwestern College, 22-21.
Tyler Schnaubert (157 pounds), Julian Gallegos (165) and heavyweight Antonio Lopez (285) accounted for 18 points with wins by fall.
Lopez stuck Josh Treybal in just 77 seconds in the 285-pound tilt.
The Jimmies got a 13-11 win out of Eddy Wilson at 141 over Tyler Hatch.
Demetreus Roby lost a 4-1 decision at 197. Dillon Kifer (149), Pat Nord (174) and Jaykob Miller (174) also lost competitive matches.
The Jimmies continue their weekend trip in Iowa today at the Briar Cliff Open in Sioux City.
