Blue Jays top Williston, fall short vs. Dickinson
Jamestown got its first West Region dual win of the season Thursday, and then nearly got its second.
“I was pretty proud of our effort today. We had nothing to be ashamed of,” JHS coach Larry Eslick said. “We’re wrestling a lot better as team. We’re starting to turn a corner. We started out a young, green team and now we’re getting to the point where we’re maturing and doing a lot of really good things and it’s fun to watch.”
Paxton Mewes at 138 pounds and Tristan Shipley (182) each notched two pins on the day.
Caleb Ellingson had a major decision against Williston and a pin against the Midgets.
The swing match against the Coyotes came at 145 where Lucas Shirley registered a pin.
“That was a big win for us. We have two pretty good kids at (145),” Eslick said. “Lucas came through for us against Dickinson and Jakob (Browning) also had a really nice win.”
Browning’s win helped launch a JHS comeback in the second dual.
The Blue Jays were down 18-0 after the first three matches, but climbed back within shouting distance going into the final two matches. Seventh-graders Ethan Bowman and Brandon Dallmann wrestled the final two tilts. Bowman won to get the Jays within a point, but Dallmann ran into a bigger and older opponent at 113.
“That’s a lot of pressure to put on seniors, let alone seventh-graders. It’s not something I like to have happen to put kids that young in that situation, but I was really proud of both Ethan and Brandon and how they competed,”
The Blue Jays’ grueling week continues on Saturday at the Gadberry Duals in Moorhead. They face four Minnesota schools: Brainerd, United Clay-Becker, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and Moorhead. The Jays also dualed Devils Lake on Tuesday.
“That’s four tough Minnesota opponents,” Eslick said. “This is a challenging week, no question about it. We’ve had a really good month so far, so hopefully more good things are ahead for us.”
