Bravo to pair of determined swimmers

The Jamestown Sun hands out these bravos and a buffalo chip this week:

* Bravo to the Ladies Individuals and Individuals Motorcycle clubs' 15th annual Christmas in July benefit for the students at the Anne Carlsen Center. The clubs donated more than $4,200 in gifts for the children.

* Bravo to Jamestown High School swimming coach Ben Smith and JHS swimmer Braydon Love, who together took second place in the Extreme North Dakota Watersports Endurance Test. The END-WET is a 27-mile swimming race on the Red River. The duo took turns in the race and were only beaten by a team that split the swimming between five members.

* Bravo to Kathy Stefonek, who had the Stefonek Softball Complex named for her last week in honor of her decades of work in softball.

* Buffalo chip to cases of pertussis, or whooping cough, rising to epidemic levels in the region. Minnesota has had 18,000 cases so far this year, while North Dakota has had 80. Pertussis is a serious threat to infants, who are too young to be immunized, so it's important for pregnant women and anyone who expects to be near babies to get the shots.

* Bravo to James Nyland, teacher at Pingree-Buchanan High School, who was among 20 teachers selected nationwide for the Federal Trials and Great Debates in United States History Summer Institute for Teachers. Nyland traveled to Washington, D.C., to study landmark federal trials.

* Bravo to Gov. Jack Dalrymple's $2.5 billion initiative to improve roads and infrastructure throughout North Dakota. The state needs to focus on making significant investments in these sectors.
