City hosts convention; Statewide Jehovah’s Witness meeting in Jamestown
Hundreds of delegates are expected to arrive in Jamestown today and Saturday for the state Jehovah’s Witness convention starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jamestown Civic Center.
Karl Bergh, the coordinator of the Jamestown Kingdom Hall elder body, said there are two state conventions and one regional convention held every year, and this is the first time since 2004 the convention will be in Jamestown.
The state conventions were split into east and west divisions and during that time, Bergh said Jamestown often hosted the 800 delegates for the event, but when the divisions united, the 1,200 to 1,300 statewide delegates had trouble finding hotel rooms in the city.
“Since 2004 we’ve pretty much been in Bismarck for all three events a year, but with the oil thing, the hotels were getting used to lots of money and it got harder for our delegates to get rooms there,” Bergh said. “The Civic Center was great over there but the rooming thing just got tougher and tougher. So between that and the fact that we’ve got a motel or two added in Jamestown, we’re happy to be back.”
Bergh said a speaker from the U.S. Jehovah’s Witness headquarters in New York City will be the keynote speaker, along with other state delegates who will speak as well. He said the event is expected to wrap up around 3:30 or 4 p.m.
“The public’s welcome, but it’s pretty much lectures and that kind of thing,” Bergh said.
