Class B roundup: Carrington, S. Border win titles

Carrington’s dominance continued on Saturday.

The Cardinals tallied 261.5 points behind five champions, capturing top honors at the Region 2 wrestling tournament on Saturday in Hillsboro.

Carrington qualified 13 wrestlers for Thursday’s Class B state tournament in Bismarck, though the Cardinals are already sending the entire team after winning the Region 2 dual tournament last weekend.

Patrick Freeman (138) and Bradee Schroeder (285) pinned their opponents in the finals, while Riley Lura (182) won by technical fall. Joe Bakke (126) and Bridger Anderson (170) won their titles with decisions. Five other Carrington wrestlers lost championship matches.

South Border also had a strong day, nipping Oakes for the Region 1 title in Lisbon by a mere five points.

The Mustangs came away with four champions in Tyler Toepke-Floyd (106), Andy Nolz (126), Tucker Meidinger (195) and James Thielges (220) en route to their total of 213 points. They qualified 11 wrestlers to state.

Runner-up Oakes is sending 11 top-four finishers to state, with Erik Loepp (132) and Michael Kelly (285) winning region championships.

Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter qualified just seven, but boasts plenty of quality. The Imperials had four champions in Jonathan Grunefelder (138), Dalton Jangula (145), Trenten Jangula (152) and Mathew Gross (182).

Josh Schlosser of Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock won at 120 pounds.

The No. 2-ranked Class B boys basketball team in the state, the Four Winds-Minnewaukan Indians, defeated Thief River Falls (Minn.) in Grand Forks on Saturday.

The Indians trailed 39-37 to start the final period, but rallied to outscored their opponent 23-15 over the final eight minutes behind 13 of Trayvon McKay’s 24 points in the ball game.

Thief River Falls received 17 points from Jacob Leier.

LaMoure-L-M’s Brady Thielges dropped in 27 points, while teammate Anthony Olson collected a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds, as the Loboes defeated South Border by 16 points.

Adam Jacobson and Hunter Pinke led the way for the Mustangs, collecting 17 and 12 points, respectively.

It needed overtime to finish, but the Rockerts were able to outlast the visiting Cardinals on Saturday.

Lacey Grann led all scoring for NR-S with a game-high 21 points. Ashley Ystaas hit a trio of 3-pointers, including a buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter, and finished with 13 points for the winners, who improved to 8-7 with the victory.

Jennifer Weekes paced Langdon scoring 14 points.
