Democrat Wismer plans run for S.D. governor

South Dakota state Rep. Susan Wismer announced Tuesday that she will seek the Democratic nomination for governor this year.

Wismer will face Piedmont resident Joe Lowe, a retired South Dakota Wildland Fire Division director, in the primary.

Wismer is a third-term legislator from Britton. She is also a small business owner; she and her sister have operated a tax and bookkeeping practice for more than 25 years.

Her family has a long history in South Dakota politics. Her grandfather Art Jones was a rural electric leader and state senator, and her uncle Curt Jones was a state senator from 1970 to 1986.

Wismer has served on the Appropriations Committee since she started in the Legislature. She is also a member of the Government Operations and Audit Committee.
