Difficult road conditions for upcoming weekend
Highways in Minnesota were in difficult driving conditions Thursday, with the northern and southern parts of Interstate 35 being among the worst.
At least 30 cars were involved in a crash in an I-35 tunnels in downtown Duluth late Thursday morning.
Emergency crews went vehicle to vehicle in the southbound lanes and treated people for injuries. Several people were put on stretchers and into ambulances.
The accident occurred as a morning snow that snarled commuter traffic abated.
At the southern end of the state, I-35 was shut down at midafternoon because of a large number of accidents with conditions that the Minnesota Department of Transportation described as hazardous with reduced visibility, drifting snow and ice.
The National Weather Service posted blizzard warnings and winter weather advisories for parts of Minnesota, especially in the west where wind gusts of up to 50 mph were expected.
Transportation officials listed more than half of the state’s roads in difficult driving condition.
