Divers pace Jays at Mandan meet

Riley Thom and Cody Lutman placed first and second at the Mandan Pentathlon on Friday.

Thom, a senior, and Lutman, a sophomore, were within five points of each other. Thom’s 11-dive total finished at 363.10, while Lutman posted a 358.65.

“Only Williston and Bismarck weren’t there and they don’t really have any divers, so it’s a promising showing for WDA,” said coach Ben Smith of Thom and Lutman’s performance.

The other five events — butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 50 free — permitted teams to mix up their lineups.

As a result, the Blue Jays had eight new qualifiers.

Brayden Love earned a trip to state in the 50 free, fly and backstroke.

Andy Oslund and Colt Rasmussen each added two more events to their ledgers. Oslund in the fly and backstroke and Rasmussen in the 100 free and backstroke.

Oslund’s fourth-place 23.94 in the 50 free, was the highest JHS finish other than the divers.

Cayden Hare also qualified in the 50 free.

“It’s fun to see the guys try some new events and they did a really good job,” Smith said.

There wasn’t much drop off from pre-holiday times.

“It’s tough in swimming because we don’t swim every day so when you take one day off it’s actually like taking two. It takes a toll, but everybody’s in the same boat,” Smith said. “I thought our guys did fine and swam well.”

Up next for the Blue Jays is a state-meet preview of sorts when they compete in an invite at Fargo Davies on Jan. 4 with every team in the state expected to be on hand.
