Ellendale into District 5 championship game

The host team Ellendale Cardinals rolled 46-31 over Medina-Pingree-Buchanan in a semifinal game of the District 5 girls basketball tournament on Friday night.

Leading 26-21 at the half, the Cardinals outscored the Thunder 15-3 in the third period to gain control for good. The Thunder struggled to find the hoop, making just nine field goals while going 1-of-12 from 3-point range and 12-of-32 at the free-throw line.

Ellendale’s Isabel Wedell and Madilyn Bommersbach scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Thunder were paced by Jordan Thomas’ double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cardinals now move on to the championship game, where they’ll face either LaMoure-Litchville-Marion on Barnes County North at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

Barnes County North notched its fifth win of the season by upsetting Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier 35-30 in quarterfinal action.

The Bison’s Kayla Scott led her team with 10 points, nine rebounds, six steals and three blocks in the victory. The Rebels committed 33 turnovers in the game, while the Bison went 10-of-17 at the free-throw line.

Olivia Anderson posted a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Rebels. The Bison move on to face No. 1-seeded LaMoure-L-M in the semifinals tonight at 7:30, while the Rebels will face Medina-P-B in loser-out play at 6 p.m.

District 7

Lacey Grann dropped in 16 points, while Lexie Weber and Ashley Ystaas each produced 15, helping New Rockford-Sheyenne defeat Four Winds-Minnewaukan 58-48 during the quarterfinals of the District 7 tournament in Four Winds.

The free-throw line was key for the Rockets, who went 22-of-28 at the charity stripe in the game. Grann went 10-of-12 at the line.

The Indians hit 10 treys as a team, and was led in scoring by Dawn Black with 18 points. The Rockets will face No. 1-seeded Lakota-Edmore in the semifinals today at 5:30, while the Indians move to a Region 4 qualifier on Monday.

Carrington used a 28-point second period to take down Warwick 65-27. The Cards received 16 points from Brooke Hochhalter and 12 apiece from Maara Nelson and Jacey Engelhorn.

Whisper Gourd paced the Warriors with 10 points. Warwick moves to loser-out play today at 4 p.m. when they’ll face Midkota-Kensal.

Carrington moves on to face Harvey-Wells County in the semifinals tonight at 7, after the Hornets defeated Midkota-Kensal 53-26.

Nicole Erickson and Kali Weinmann each tossed in 11 points for the Hornets, who led 23-14 at the half. McKenna Frappier and Saddie Harding each scored nine for the Mustangs.
