Fargo area sports anchor placed on leave after arrest for obstructing police
FARGO — The sports director for Fox affiliate KVRR-TV has been placed on leave for a week after pleading guilty Monday to obstructing police.
James Daniel Nelson, 28, read a prepared apology on-air during the 9 p.m. broadcast Tuesday. The anchors said Nelson was suspended for a week and would return Monday.
Nelson was arrested at 5:55 a.m. Sunday for obstructing police officers who were responding to an apparent assault in south Fargo, Sgt. Shannon Ruziska said.
“They were investigating what looked to be an assault, and he hindered their investigation,” said Ruziska, who added that Nelson was not involved in the assault.
“He was warned and didn’t heed the warning,” Ruziska said.
Nelson was charged with physical obstruction of a government function, a Class A misdemeanor, and pleaded guilty Monday, according to online court records.
Judge Steven Marquart sentenced him to one year of unsupervised probation and $300 in fees.
Nelson was hired as KVRR’s sports director in September 2011.
