Fire burns potato warehouse near Perham

PERHAM, Minn. -- Fire crews were responding Tuesday evening to a large blaze at a potato warehouse owned by R.D. Offutt Co. southeast of Perham.

At least eight departments responded to the fire, which began on the southwest side of the building, off Otter Tail County Highway 80.

A police officer at the scene said it was called in about 4:20 p.m. as a possible electrical fire, but that hasn’t been confirmed. There were no reports of injuries.

Roads in the area were blocked off, and the fire was still burning three hours later. One wall of the warehouse appeared to collapse.

Lake Region Electric Cooperative also was on scene, cutting wires leading to the building.

Ron Offutt is the founder and chairman of R.D. Offutt Co., the nation’s largest potato producer. The company’s corporate headquarters is in Fargo.
