Former Troop 40 Girl Scouts hold reunion
Eleven of the original 18 Girl Scouts of Troop 40, organized under the leadership of Charlotte Hansen, met for a 50-year reunion of their “dream trip” May 16-18 in Minneapolis.
The “dream trip” being celebrated took place during July and August 1964. After countless fundraisers — Christmas wreath sales, Girl Scout cookie sales, bake sales, sales from cookbooks created by Hansen with contributions to the cookbook from the girls’ mothers, fundraising suppers held at First United Methodist Church, food booths at the Stutsman County Fair and others over a four-year period —Troop 40 had enough money saved to take a chartered bus trip to Washington, D.C., New York City, the New York World’s Fair, Niagara Falls and many points in between.
The Girl Scouts of Troop 40 all graduated from Jamestown High School in June 1965. They have stayed in touch over the years since, with Hansen hosting several reunions. Troop 40 was established in 1953 at Lincoln Elementary School by Hansen when the girls were in the second grade.
Arrival day at the Residence Inn Marriott in Roseville, Minnesota, was May 16. The women had dinner at Axel’s Restaurant in Roseville and had a late night of reminiscing. A luncheon was held May 17 at Midland Hills Country Club, Falcon Heights, Minnesota, and a pizza party was held at Hansen’s residence. The women sang Girl Scout songs. This was followed by another late evening of reminiscing and catching up with each others’ lives. Jo-Ida Hansen and her husband, John, hosted an afternoon and evening at their home on May 18. After a dinner, Hansen’s 92nd birthday was celebrated with cake and a card shower.
Jo-Ida Hansen was planner and organizer for the three-day event.
The Troop 40 Girl Scouts attending were: Mary (Holtan) Craft, Spiritwood, N.D.; Kit Bleecker, Chevy Chase, Maryland; Patti (Clemens) Peterson, Donna (Neumann) Gullickson and Nadine (Otto) Readel, Jamestown; Jo-Ida Hansen, New Brighton, Minnesota; Jane Amundson, Arboles, Colorado; Danelle (Churchill) Hauck, Minot; Sandy (Provolt) Patzer, Grand Island, Nebraska; Linda (Olson) Davis, Polson, Montana; Kay (Christenson) Dahl, Ramsey, Minnesota; and their troop leader Hansen, New Brighton.
