SUPERIOR, Wis. — Two 12-year-old girls were plucked from a lake Saturday afternoon after their kayaks overturned.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Olson happened upon the girls as he was patrolling the Minong Flowage by personal watercraft about 2 p.m., a sheriff’s office news release said.

At the scene, Olson found the girls exhausted and struggling to get back into the kayaks, which were completely filled with water. The girls, both of Bruce, Wis., were not wearing lifejackets, according to the sheriff.

Olson brought the two girls ashore.
