Grammys: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis sweep rap awards, win best new artist
Jamestown North Dakota 121 3rd St NW 58401

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis swept all the Grammy rap categories on Sunday — before the main ceremony even started.

The Seattle duo took home the Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song awards for “Thrift Shop,” and the Best Rap Album trophy for “The Heist.” Additionally, the pair won Best New Artist at the top of the televised ceremony.

Presented during the Grammy pre-ceremony, the guys were unable to accept their awards. They were preparing for a performance of their pro-gay single, “Same Love,” with singer-songwriter Mary Lambert during the televised ceremony. Madonna will also make an appearance.

It will be a huge undertaking: 34 couples from different orientations and backgrounds will be married during the performance, including Lewis’ sister and her boyfriend. Queen Latifah will be officiating the ceremony.

They are also nominated for Song of the Year for “Same Love” and Album of the Year for “The Heist.”

To their credit, the guys independently produced, recorded and released the album. It reached No. 1 on iTunes within hours of being released on October 9, 2012 with no mainstream promotion or support.
