Hanson cited for award

Janell Hanson of Jamestown was named the coach of the year at the Special Olympics North Dakota State Awards Banquet in Fargo on Nov. 16.

Hanson, a paraprofessional at Jamestown Middle School, has been coaching a variety of sports, including track and field and soccer, with Special Olympics since 1999.

Hanson, a former track and field and basketball athlete at North Dakota State College of Science and Valley City State, works with many of the athletes during her time at school.

“I enjoy seeing the participants have fun, and seeing them improve from one day to the next,” Hanson said.

Hanson helps recruit new athletes and also serves as a chaperone to state events and volunteers at many fundraisers for Special Olympics, including the Knights of Columbus pancake feed.

Several other local individuals and organizations were nominated for awards.

Dustin Berglund: outstanding volunteer.

University of Jamestown: outstanding school.

Jamestown Knights of Columbus: outstanding organization.

Josh Rude: Flame of Hope.
