Helpful hint for keeping your avocados from turning brown

FARGO — Nothing goes better with the fresh onions, tomatoes and cilantro in my summer garden than avocados.

Unfortunately, I haven’t quite figured out how to propagate this Southern fruit in my Midwestern garden.

But I have solved how to keep its bright-green flesh from turning brown when I only need half an avocado to complete my recipe (always guacamole, of course).

After you’ve cut the fruit in half, wrap the side containing the pit in a damp paper towel with a squeeze of lemon juice. Slip it into a zip-top bag and refrigerate for up to two days without losing its grassy color.

Now, if I only could get an avocado tree to survive the winter.
