Ice fishing derby tickets sold out for tomorrow
Tickets are sold out for the Fifth Annual Jamestown Rural Fire Department and Knights of Columbus Ice Fishing Tournament and Raffle.
The tournament takes place from 1-4 p.m. Saturday off of Pelican Point on the Jamestown Reservoir, north of Jamestown on 28th Street Southeast off of Highway 281. Registration starts at 10 a.m.
JRFD Chief Rick Woehl said they are expecting about 1,000 people for the tournament.
"Our phones have been ringing off the hook," Woehl said. "Every firefighter has had people asking for tickets, but we are out."
The $20 ticket is the only way to get onto the designated ice fishing area for the tournament on Saturday. The ticket is also good for the raffle the Knights of Columbus hold in conjunction with the tournament. Top prize is 2013 Chevrolet Camaro, or $15,000 cash donated by Don Wilhelm of Wilhelm Buick, Chevrolet, GMC.
The ice is 30 inches thick on the reservoir, according to Woehl, with about eight to 10 inches of snow on top.
"We will allow four-wheel drive ATVs and snowmobiles on the ice, but no personal vehicles," Woehl said.
Proceeds from the tournament will go to help the department buy a new tanker truck.
"The new tanker will cost about $180,000," Woehl said. "We've been saving up for this vehicle for a little while."
The ice fishing area will be cordoned off and only tournament participants will be allowed on the ice. Woehl said department members will help with parking for the event and making sure no one sneaks into the ice fishing area.
No one is allowed in the ice fishing area before 10 a.m. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. participants may set up their fishing spots. No new holes may be made after 1 p.m.
