Ila Leone Woods Gutensohn

After giving everyone who ever knew her great joy for one hundred years, Ila Leone Woods Gutensohn died June 28th 2014 at the Baptist Health Care Center in Bismarck. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 24th at 11:00am in the chapel at the Baptist Health Care Center, 3400 Nebraska Drive, Bismarck, ND with the Rev. Clyde Zimbelman officiating. A private family burial will take place at the Hazelton Cemetery, Hazelton, ND in the afternoon following the memorial service.

Ila was born on January 23, 1914 to Glen and Birdie Ann Woods in Linton, ND. She was raised in a family of ten children, 5 daughters and 5 sons, five of whom survive her. She attended country school in Livona Township where her mother was a teacher. She often told stories about how her father bundled the children into a one horse sleigh covering them with blankets, a cow hide and warming their feet with heated stones as he drove them to school on cold winter mornings. Ila attended and graduated from Linton High School in 1933. She was employed at the Emmons County Courthouse after graduation. In 1935, Ila married Philip Gutensohn on December 27th in Linton, ND. They raised a family of five sons and two daughters. Ila was actively involved in her childrens lives at home and at school. In Turtle Lake, ND, she was involved in activities at the Methodist Church, and founded the Turtle Lake Band Mothers to raise money for new band uniforms. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 104 in Washburn.

Ila was a woman of great beauty, wisdom, charm, and steadfast love for her family and friends. In short, she led her life as an example to those around her.

Ila is survived by her children Anna Laura (Pat) Ness, Bismarck, ND, Ila Thomas (Lowell) Tigard, OR, Richard Gutensohn (Jacque), Gresham, OR., Charles Gutensohn (Carol), Poway, CA., and Joel Gutensohn (Linda), Bismarck, ND and a daughter-in-law, Lynn Gutensohn, Burlington, WA. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Her surviving sisters include Ellen Tuttle, Strasburg ND, Bese Kautz, Strasburg, Jane Conn (David), Linton, ND and her brothers Bob Woods (Marion), Troutdale, OR, and Fred Woods, OR.

Ila was preceded in death by her husband, Philip, a baby daughter, Betty Jane, two sons, Philip (Mike) and Gerald (Jerry) Gutensohn, a son-in-law Clifford Ness, a daughter-in-law, Joyce Gutensohn, and one great grandson.

Her amazing legacy lives on in her family and in the lives of everyone she touched.

In lieu of flowers, in accordance with Ilas wishes, the family prefers memorials be given to the Baptist Health Care Center or to the charity of your choice.
