Injuries plague JHS in Bismarck

Mounting injuries are taking a toll on the Jamestown High School gymnastics team.

The Blue Jays took a slight step backwards score-wise Friday at the Julie Ziegler Invite in Bismarck, although the lineup was far from whole.

0 Talk about it

“Some of the little (injuries) caught up with us tonight,” coach Dave Tews said. “We didn’t have our best kids out there. The competition was pretty tough. … The stars didn’t line up real well for us tonight.”

The Blue Jays finished fourth with a score of 133.5, better than Grand Forks and Mandan, but trailing Minot, Bismarck Century and Bismarck.

Erin Hillerud’s fifth-place finish on bars (8.75) was the team’s top finish. She was also sixth on floor (9.175) en route to a 34.825, which put her fifth.

Abbie Conlon (32.85) and Madison Mandan (32.325) placed 12th and 15th, respectively.

Mandan’s 8.125 on beam was a team-high.

“She’s still a little under the weather and injured, but her all around score is real solid for her,” Tews said.

Conlon scored on all four events.

“She had a good meet,” Tews said.

Maggie Ridley, Kaiann Arellano, Jayden Diemert and Morgan Mewes were all limited because of injury, plus Jenna Stilwell continues to be sidelined by a nagging shoulder injury.

“It could’ve been worse. When you think about it, we had a bad meet and we still scored 133, so we were competitive,” Tews said. “Hopefully we can get some people back in the lineup and that will certainly help our cause.”

Minot blew the competition out of the water with its 143.9.

“They could hit 148 before the season is over,” Tews said. “Scoring was tough, but I thought they easily could have been up around 145 or 146.”

The Blue Jays are back in action Feb. 1 when they host Grand Forks.
