Jays defeat Minot
It was business as usually for the Blue Jay volleyball team on Friday, which was a great sign.
“We talked about that beforehand, that this was the first time we were playing after being named West Region (regular-season) champs,” JHS coach Sara Hegerle said. “It would have been really easy for us to take these guys lightly, but I thought we really stayed focused and took care of business.
“We keep talking about staying focused on what we are doing at the moment and try not to focus too far ahead.”
Senior middle blocker Addie Eamon once again led the Jays in kills against Minot with 10, which was complemented by 5 kills each from junior outside hitters McKayla Keller and Jenna Stilwell. Senior setter Josie Hegerle led the team in aces (4) and assists (22), while senior libero McKayla Orr turned in a team-best 18 digs in the back row.
It was the 21st consecutive victory for the Blue Jays, who improved to 29-3 overall. Jamestown also stayed perfect in the West Region, improving to 15-0 with one conference match left to play.
“Honestly, at the beginning of the season we didn’t even think about going undefeated in the West Region, and I haven’t heard the kids mention it,” Hegerle said. “The moment you start thinking about not losing, then you play not to lose. We are just going to approach it with the same focus.”
That match will take place in Jamestown on Tuesday against visiting Mandan. It’s also the Jays’ regular-season finale.
Jamestown plays host to the West Region tournament beginning Nov. 14.
“What’s great about it is that it’s senior night, which has been an emotional night for our seniors in past years, but we are hosting the West Region so it won’t be our last home appearance,” Hegerle said. “(The seniors) won’t have to feel like it will be the last time playing on their home court. They’ll have the opportunity to do that the week after.
“We’re looking forward to playing Mandan,” Hegerle added. “They’ve got a feisty bunch of kids. Hopefully we’ll have a good crowd.”
