Jamestown High School won two of its first three matches at the Bismarck/Century Invite last year, and that season turned out pretty good.

The Blue Jays did the same on Friday in the Capital City.

Jamestown beat Fargo South and Devils Lake 3-0 and lost to Fargo Shanley 3-0, although the opening two sets were tight against the East Region favorite.

It was a solid overall start for the defending state champions, who play four more matches today.

“I’m optimist about how we played, but I’m glad it’s August and not November,” coach Sara Hegerle said. “We made a lot of mistakes. There’s plenty to work on, but that’s what’s so good about a tournament like this. We get to play a lot of matches and see a lot of different things.”

The Blue Jays had little trouble with the Bruins —who are expected to be among the contenders in the East Region — or with Devils Lake.

They led Fargo Shanley in the opening frame, but the lead slipped away.

“We were ahead by quite a bit against Shanley, but it got away from us and we fizzled at the end,” Hegerle said. “Our offense isn’t there yet. You can’t just free ball it over to a team that’s pounding the ball at you. We did that far too often.”

Hegerle said the defense and passing were solid, but the attack remains a work in progress.

Julina Niemeier’s 36 digs were a team high, while Meghan Orr turned up 33 balls. Rainey Selvig had a team-leading five blocks.

Niemeier also led in aces (10), while Keller’s 14 kills were a team-high.

Freshman setter Megan Gaffaney dished out 37 assists.

“The ceiling on this team is high,” Hegerle said. “We’re not there yet obviously, but there were a lot of good things today.”

The Blue Jays start the busy four-match slate today at 11:30 a.m. against Fargo Davies, another forecasted contender in the East.
