The Jamestown High School girls swimming and diving team may not have made a lot of headway in the team standings at the West Region meet, but that doesn’t mean it laid down for anyone. Annie Hart placed second in the backstroke and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle to pace the Blue Jays, who hosted the conference meet Saturday at the JHS pool.

The Blue Jays finished sixth out of six teams with 229 points. Minot won the meet with a 460, edging Bismarck Century by 18 points.

Hart, a junior from Valley City, placed second to standout Century swimmer Dani Bergeson in the backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 1.50 seconds. Bergeson swam a 58.31. Brianna Johnson of Jamestown placed seventh with a 1:07.86.

Hart was also fifth in the 50 free, swimming a 26.07. Minot’s Francesca Walker-Rozo’s winning 24.88 helped complete her perfect day, as she also won the butterfly and was a leg on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Jamestown’s next highest finishers placed seventh. LaMae Turk earned her that spot with a 1:08.35 in the butterfly and Madison Mandan in the 100 freestyle (59.24). Diver Morgan Mewes (324.60), Karlie Marler in the butterfly (1:09.68), Paige Peterson in the 100 freestyle (1:00.13) and Ashley Shafer in the 500 freestyle (5:58.90) each placed 10th to round out Blue Jays in the top 10.

Jamestown’s relays placed fifth, as the 200 and 400 freestyle relays beat Bismarck, while the 200 medley relay finished ahead of Mandan.

Hart was named to the all-West Region team.

Ketti Ringwall of Williston was the region’s senior athlete of the year, while co-coach of the year honors went to Dan Hinton of Minot and Alex Lucy of Bismarck High.

The Blue Jays will head to the state meet, which takes place Friday and Saturday in Grand Forks.
