Put another tally in the runner-up column for the Jamestown High School boys golf team.

For the fourth time this season, the Blue Jays took second, this time shooting a 316 and only finishing three strokes off the pace at the Turtle Mountain Invite, played at the 9-hole Garden Gate Golf Course in Dunseith.

A brutal crosswind made life difficult for most of the meet’s golfers throughout the day and combined with the unfamiliarity of the course, scores were expected to be higher than normal, Jamestown coach Dean Kraft said.

“Nobody had seen that course except for a few kids that played JV a long time ago,” Kraft said. “And there was a big crosswind on most holes. Everybody across the board struggled with that.”

Almost everybody.

Bismarck’s Connor Hellman fired an impressive 1-under 69 to come away as medalist. The next closest score was a 74, which was earned by Jamestown’s Austin Rene, Century’s Drew Lingle and Minot’s Cody Reynolds. The Demons also won the meet, edging Jamestown by three strokes.

Kraft said bad holes plagued his squad.

“It’s another case of some big numbers, but on this kind of day, you’d almost expect that,” he said. “It’s hard to be upset with them.”

Jakobi Lux finished sixth with a 77, and Brandon Stahlhut came in 11th with an 82, while Brady Hoggarth saw his score used, as he placed in a tie for 15th with an 83. Nick Stockert (85) and Ben Harris (94) were also in action.

Jamestown travels to the St. Mary’s Invite on Friday at Hawktree Golf Club in Bismarck.
