Jays take sixth at home

Swimming consecutive days for the first time didn’t seem to affect Jamestown on Saturday.

The Blue Jays finished a strong sixth at its home meet, which featured every team in the state but one.

0 Talk about it

They had two top three relay performances, six individual top 10s and a strong outing on the diving board to total 194 points in the 10-team meet.

“So far it’s the biggest meet in the state. It was fun with the majority of teams there to see how we’d do against them and it went well,” said JHS coach Ben Smith.

The Blue Jays defeated Williston in a dual on Friday night and then came back with the invite Saturday, which is the same way the state meet is set up.

“This was our first chance to swim back-to-back days so we wanted to focus on Friday and then bring it back and swim faster (Saturday) and not have any drop off,” Smith said.

The Blue Jays were third in both free relays. The quartet of Colt Rasmussen, Caydon Hare, Braydon Love and Andy Oslund posted a time of 1:34.97 in the 200 and 3:30.45 in the 400. They finished behind only powerhouses Bismarck Century and Fargo North in the 200 and Minot and Century in the 400.

“The kids really focused on their races,” Smith said. “Those were all around well-put together relays. For them to finish third like they did was a pretty big highlight.”

Rasmussen also hung right with the top speedsters in the state, taking third in both the 100 (51.13) and 200 freestyles (1:54.48). Jamestown and Fargo North swimmers posted four of the top five times in the 100 as Oslund raced to a fifth-place finish in 52.27.

That was just half of Oslund’s fine work. He was also third in the 50 sprint (23.31), not too far behind Zach Grosz of Century and North’s Steve Rider.

Braydon Love turned in strong swims in the 200 (1:58.80) and 500 freestyles (5:35.60), placing seventh and 10th, respectively.

In the 100 butterfly, Hare touched 12th in 52.27.

The divers turned in another big day. Cody Lutman’s 339.70 was good for third overall. Riley Thom was right behind in fifth at 331.35. Thom had a banner weekend. His score of 229.45 in Friday’s dual was just a 10th of a point off the six-dive school record.

“It’s a busy weekend for us, but it went really well,” Smith said. “I was really happy with how our kids did.”

The Blue Jays don’t have a meet this week. They travel to Bismarck to dual Century on Jan. 30. The Patriots won the meet Saturday with 462 points. North (382) and Minot (373) rounded out the top three.
