Drew Topp wore championship colors on Saturday.

The first-year wrestler for Jamestown High School put on the Blue Jays’ special singlet, a uniform reserved for championship matches.

And he may have only won a single match to get to the 160-pound championship at the Knights of Columbus Invite at the JHS gym, but he did so in style. His pin in 1 minute, 18 seconds against Anthony Capistran of Valley City won a tiebreaker, punching his ticket to the title tilt.

Topp is a senior with a martial arts background who decided to go out for wrestling in his final prep year.

“He’s come a long way so far,” Jamestown coach Larry Eslick said. “He was pretty proud to wear our traditional championship singlet. He’s coming along rapidly. It was a pleasant surprise.”

Still considerably inexperienced in a sport dominated by athletes who start in grade school or younger, Topp was pinned by Valley City’s Mark Miler in 2:49 in the title bout.

“Just the other day he gets his first varsity win,” Eslick said. “(Saturday), he makes it to his first championship match. It’s a great story.”

Topp was one of four Blue Jays in the finals, all of whom fell. Jamestown finished in fourth place with 127.5 points. Moorhead, with its six champions and 16 top-three placers, won the tournament with 232 points.

Perhaps the most intriguing match of the entire tournament was at 195, where No. 1-ranked Zach Doty of Valley City squared off against No. 2-ranked Eathan Gumke of Jamestown. The match was tied at two with around 30 seconds to go, when Doty caught Gumke and pinned him with only 22 seconds remaining.

“It was a little bit of a tough finish,” Eslick said. “Eathan wrestled a really patient, smart match. … He got caught in a little ankle pick and got cradled. With that said, we were really happy with the way the match was going. The good thing about wrestling is there are rematches. We’ll see him two weeks down the road at the Valley City tournament.”

Eslick said the most exciting match might have been Mewes’ loss to Kenny Mark of Moorhead at 138. Both were undefeated in pool play, leaving the final round robin match to determine the champion. Mark came up with a late takedown to win 3-2.

“Paxton ran into a pretty good kid,” Eslick said. “Paxton had a 2-1 lead late. It was a really good match down to the end. It’s kind of a heartbreaker for Paxton.”

Joseph Grove of Moorhead pinned Shipley in the first minute of action in the 182-pound final.

“This particular kid has some pretty nice credentials about him,” Eslick said of Grove. “The kid was just a beast. He turned (Triston) to his back. That won’t happen very often to Triston with North Dakota wrestlers.”

Kyle Anderson (220), Caleb Ellingson (170) and Kane Barnick (120) pinned their opponents to place third for the Blue Jays, who host powerhouse Bismarck High on Thursday.
