Ranked sixth in the NAIA preseason top 25, Grand View University of Iowa represented another big test for the University of Jamestown volleyball team on Saturday.

The Jimmies passed this one with straight As.

After dropping the first set 25-19, the Jimmies put together their best stretch of the early season, winning the next three sets 25-21, 25-19 and 25-12. It was just the second loss in eight matches for the Kings.

The Jimmies also swept Clarke (Iowa) Saturday in Bellevue, Neb., meaning a strong 3-1 record on the weekend.

“I thought 2-2 would have been a good weekend for us and the one team I thought we’d beat (Culver-Stockton) we lost to, and the three I thought we’d struggle with we beat,” UJ head coach Jon Hegerle said. “Winning obviously is important, but the big part of it was the ground work was laid for the foundation for what’s going to make us successful.”

There was more to it than the X’s and O’s in the significant win over No. 6 Grand View.

“We just played with so much energy (Saturday). That’s not something you can measure statistically,” Hegerle said. “The girls played hard. They played for each other. They played for the joy of competing and not worrying about the wins and losses and that freed them up to go out and perform the way they’re capable of.”

The offense remains a work in progress, but Hegerle was particularly pleased with the team’s passing, serving and defense.

“Our hitting still isn’t where it needs to be. We’re hitting at about .170 (percentage). We want to be around .250, but the offense doesn’t need to be great when you’re playing with great energy and focus,” Hegerle said.

Naomi Walther and Kaitlin Anderson each hit over .285 against Grand View with eight kills, respectively. Hegerle said both played all day.

Also singled out were right-side hitter Kaitlyn Bollingberg and defensive specialist Amanda Kramer.

“No one had a bad weekend,” Hegerle said. “But those girls stood out in particular.”

The Jimmies’ serving was really on, especially against Grand View as they out-aced the Kings 11-0. Walther and Alaina Brown led the way with three each.

Brown had three more aces against Clark.

Improved back-row play, anchored by Krahler, was another highlight.

“In the first five matches our back row hadn’t played up to the level they’re capable, but the last three matches, especially (Saturday) it was much better,” Hegerle said.

The win over Grand View means the Jimmies are 1-1 against top 25 teams this season. They get several more chances against top-level competition, including this coming weekend in Orange City, Iowa. The three-game schedule features No. 5 Northwestern (Iowa) Friday and No. 13 Dordt (Iowa) and No. 16 MidAmerican Nazarene (Kan.) on Saturday.
