University of Jamestown volleyball coach Jon Hegerle was realistic about his team’s two wins on Friday, the final day of a tournament in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The Jimmies started out with a pair of losses to solid competition on Thursday, but evened their record by sweeping West Virginia Tech 25-20, 25-15, 25-12 and Warner 25-19, 25-23 and 25-20.

“These teams weren’t of the same caliber of teams we saw (Thursday),” Hegerle said. “I thought we came out poorly in the first set, maybe from a hangover from the day before. Once we got into rhythm, it was pretty tough for them to stick with us.”

West Virginia Tech put up a fight in the first match, but that was it. Kaitlin Anderson had a team-high eight kills, also adding a dig, a block and two aces. Janna Johnson had four kills and a block, and Alaina Brown had a trio of aces.

Against Warner, Jamestown also won handily, though it doesn’t appear as such in the final score.

“Those last two sets, I think we were up 24-18 and 24-17, but they served a couple aces on it,” Hegerle said. “They really served tough at us. Other than that, they didn’t put much pressure on us.”

Johnson finished with eight kills, Heather Bachman had seven and Anderson added six. The sharp-serving Brown had five aces this time.

For their efforts, Anderson and Johnson were both named to the all-tournament team. The Jimmies head to a tournament in Bellevue, Nebraska on Friday.

“We certainly showed some promise,” Hegerle said. “We’re starting to figure each other out. We still need to limit our errors. We make too many errors.”
