Jimmies finish trip with two victories
Jimmie softball coach Kevin Gall was hoping to bring some momentum, and good weather, back from the desert with them.
The Jimmies registered two more wins on Friday, ending their trip to Tucson, Ariz., with four straight wins, while the snow continued to melt back home.
“There was nothing wrong with how we played. Every year you think, ‘Gosh, there was probably a game or two we could have won,’ but overall I think we got some good things accomplished,” Gall said. “There are no easy games anymore. It’s not like it used to be. I feel like we represented pretty well.”
The Jimmies (7-9) defeated College of Saint Mary, Neb., 2-1 and then capped the week-long adventure with a 15-5 6-inning rout of Robert Morris, Ill.
“Our pitching did pretty decent all week,” Gall said. “We found out down here we’re going to have to figure out ways to score runs. We didn’t hit a single home run, so we’re going to single people to death, split a game once in a while and play small ball.”
That’s what they did to beat College of Saint Mary.
Down 1-0 into the bottom of the sixth, Courtney Van Den Bussche scored on a wild pitch to level it at 1-all. In the bottom of the seventh, Megan Heriot singled in pinch runner Sarah Money with the winning run with two outs.
Emily Snow earned the win in the circle with a strong complete-game effort.
In the nightcap, the Jimmies trailed 5-2, but exploded for eight runs in the of the fifth. Sydney Greenlund had the big blow with a bases-clearing triple to score three runs. Earlier, Greenlund had an RBI double. Hattie Fullmer also doubled in the win.
Freshman Hanna Dunnigan notched another win pitching-wise, going all six in the circle.
“It was good to finish up the way we did. We swung the bats pretty well and put some runs on the board,” Gall said. “I talked earlier about getting some momentum. I think we did that and hopefully now we can carry that over when we get back home.”
