The Jimmie softball team won two out of three on Thursday in Tucson, Ariz.

The University of Jamestown outscored Peru State, Neb., and Dordt, Iowa 10-4 with 4-0 and 6-1 wins. Maybe even more impressively, they lost just 4-2 to Olivet Nazarene, Ill., which is ranked 10th in the NAIA.

It was a long day for the 5-9 Jimmies, who got done around 10 p.m. central time. They close the 13-game trip today against College of Saint Mary (Neb.) and Robert Morris (Ill.).

“We played well all day defensively and that was a big thing for us,” coach Kevin Gall said. “You play three games in a day and you wonder if you’re going to have enough gas in the tank, but we did. … We played pretty well for the most part.

“We want to start building some momentum and I thought we did that. Part of coming on this trip is to get things sewn up and start building some momentum for the rest of the season, so hopefully we can do that (Friday).”

An umpiring mistake in the sixth inning led to an extra run for Olivet Nazarene in the opening game, so in effect the Jimmies lost just 3-2.

Emily Snow was strong in the circle for the Jimmies.

Freshman Hanna Dunnigan had another strong outing in the circle against Peru State, firing a shutout in the Jimmies’ 4-0 win.

The Jimmies banged out 10 hits. Courtney Van Den Bussche had three of them. Dunnigan and Hattie Fullmer had two each. Dunnigan also had two RBI.

In the final game of the day, Mandy Thiessen tossed six strong innings to register the win.

Emily Newman and Autumn Wang each had two hits. Wang doubled and scored twice. Hattie Fullmer tripled, while Van Den Bussche singled and scored.

“We hit a lot of balls well, especially against Dordt that were caught,” Gall said. “Hopefully that gives us some confidence and we can swing the bats well (Friday) again.”
