Jason Shaw showed on Friday why University of Jamestown baseball coach Tom Hager is hoping to depend on him regularly this season.

Shaw, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound pitcher out of Lynnwood, Wash., was in command for all seven innings against Briar Cliff, helping the Jimmies to a 4-0 blanking that completed the doubleheader sweep in Sioux City, Iowa. Jamestown won the opener 8-6.

The Jimmies, who improved to 13-3, scored three in the sixth inning to break up the pitcher’s duel in the nightcap. Until then, the game had been scoreless with Shaw and Briar Cliff’s Dylan Romo controlling the game.

“Jason Shaw was outstanding,” Hager said. “He was able to get ahead of their hitters all game long and then put them away when he needed to. He had great stuff today. It was fun to watch him throw.”

Shaw improved to 2-0, allowing just three hits while walking none in the complete-game effort. Erik Peterson had two hits in the win.

In the first game, Tanner Dahl went six innings to improve his season mark to 3-1. He gave up three runs in the sixth and struggled to start the seventh, making way for Ryan Vernon, who closed it out.

Jamestown scored a run in the second, three in the third, two in the sixth and two in the seventh, never giving up the lead. Peterson and Spencer Flaten each had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs. Nolan Skowronek also had two hits.

“We had a nice, solid outing from Tanner Dahl in game 1,” Hager said. “We found a way to put runs on the board.”

The Jimmies continue their road trip today, when they visit Midland (Neb.) for a doubleheader. They’ll play one nine-inning affair on Sunday at Morningside (Iowa) before returning home.
