JPS to offer 4 percent raise
Jamestown Public Schools will offer administrators a 4 percent salary increase for the 2013-2014 school year currently underway.
“We’ll get together on that salary schedule after that first of the year,” said Roger Haut, president of the School Board, during a contract negotiations meeting with administrators Tuesday.
It was the second and final contract negotiations meeting with school administrators regarding 2013-2014, and it was also the first time the administration has negotiated as a group with the School Board.
Administrators, a group including principals and assistant principals, as well as the food service director, technology coordinator, athletic/activity director and the director of the James Valley Career and Technology Center, had initially requested implementation of a salary schedule beginning with the current school year.
“… we’ve spent significant time considering this proposal,” said Gail Wold, Jamestown Middle School principal and one of the administration negotiators. “… adopting a salary schedule would cost .65 percent less than the 8.25 percent given to the teachers (over two years) and would simultaneously put transparency and structure in a system that lacks that right now.”
Haut said the board will issue contracts at 4 percent for this year and would like to begin working on salary schedules and handbook policies for administrators in January.
He said waiting to adopt a salary schedule would give the School Board more time to examine the schedule and “digest it, instead of making a quick decision on it.”
Administrators had formed a salary schedule with increases ranging from 3.8 to 14.8 percent, based on position responsibility, length of work year, experience and education.
They had also requested that the number of work days be outlined on an annual work calendar, that formal consultation with the superintendent would precede any adjustment in work responsibilities and that personal leave would be based on number of work days in the contract.
