LaMoure, Fairview advance
LaMoure and Fairview advanced to Sunday’s championship with semifinal wins on Saturday at Jack Brown Stadium in the Class A amateur baseball tournament.
It was a busy day for Fairview as the western-Montana based team, which also features a handful of players from Williston and Dickinson, beat Tolna in eight innings in its opener before beating Beulah in the semifinals.
Beulah 10, New Rockford 2
It took past the scheduled 11 a.m. starting time for all nine of Beulah’s players to show up, but once they got there it worked out.
Tyler Schmidt tossed a complete-game on the mound for the Blackjaws, who got plenty of help from some shaky defense from New Rockford.
Beulah scored at least one run in every inning but the sixth en route to a 10-2 win over the Twins.
Pat Eagan, Ike Michaelson, Reid Flaagan and Blackjaws longtime veteran Dennis Samuels each had two hits in the win.
Schmidt piled up eight strikeouts on the mound for the Blackjaws, allowing just five hits and he did not walk a batter.
Mark Nyhus doubled twice for the Twins, but they struggled on the mound and in the field with seven errors and eight walks.
Fairview 9, Tolna 5 (8)
After giving away the lead in the seventh, Fairview rallied for four runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat Tolna 9-5 in the final first-round game Saturday.
Errors plagued both teams, but two led directly to Tolna scoring the tying run in the bottom of the seventh.
But Fairview answered quickly in the top of the eighth inning as the first four batters in the inning reached base and scored.
Six of Fairview’s 13 hits were doubles with leadoff man Trenton Hove banging out three two-baggers.
Lane Huck added two doubles and an RBI for Fairview.
Tolna got three hits from Alex Herman. Dalton Flaagan added two. Tolna was charged with six errors in the game.
LaMoure Merchants 5,
Kensal Mallards 1
Big right-hander Aaron Stemen pitched LaMoure into the championship game.
Stemen allowed just one run on three hits with six strikeouts.
The Merchants got just four hits off Kensal pitcher Brian Wenzel, but LaMoure capitalized on five errors by the Mallards.
Adam Wieland had two RBI for LaMoure. Stemen and Nic Moser were each 1-for-2 with two runs. Jared Meiklejohn singled home Brady Thielges in the third to make it 3-0 LaMoure.
Scott Nelson’s ringing double in the top of the sixth chased home Nate Soulis for Kensal’s lone run. Landon Weiser and Shaun Hogan had the other two hits.
Fairview 5, Beulah 1
Taylor Frenzel’s strong outing on the mound lifted Fairview into the championship game.
Frenzel surrendered just one run on six hits to beat Beulah, 5-1.
It was the second meeting of the season between the two teams, who make up the bulk of the amateur baseball contingent in the western third of the state.
A.J. Schaefbauer had a double and triple as Fairview rapped out 14 hits.
Matt Kohler had three singles. Brett Schweitzer doubled, singled and had two RBI. Quinn Devlin went 2-for4 with an RBI.
Ike Michaelson had two hits to lead Beulah.
