LaMoure hammers Renville County, 14-1
LANGDON, N.D. — For Parker Stemen, pitching was harder than the numbers indicated.
Stemen allowed only four hits — three of them in the fourth inning when the Muskrats scored their run. But it took Stemen 83 pitches to get through the five innings before the game ended by the 10-run rule.
“I was having a lot of trouble finding the strike zone,” Stemen said. “I couldn’t get my curve working, so I was relying too much on my fastball. Usually (control) hasn’t been a problem. Maybe it was state tournament first-game jitters.”
In only the second inning did Renville County fail to get a baserunner, and it took a spectacular diving catch in the gap by right fielder Anthony Olson for that to happen. In three of the five innings, Renville County had two or more baserunners.
But there was some familiarity in Stemen’s performance for LaMoure coach J.R. Thielges.
That’s how he’s thrown all year,” Thielges said. “He’ll strike out two straight batters, then walk a couple and get himself in trouble. But he’s a competitor. He came up big.”
So did the 10-hit LaMoure offense. LaMoure jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first, with Jared Meiklejohn popping a single to center to drive in the first run and Olson grounding a single into left to knock in the second.
LaMoure broke the game open in the second with a six-run inning. Olson capped it with his seventh home run of the season and second in as many games, a 3-run shot over the center-field fence near the 350-foot mark for a 9-0 lead.
In a strong all-around game, Olson also charged in on a flair to the outfield and threw the batter out at first base to deny the Muskrats a hit.
“That catch was something else,” Thielges said. “And (Olson’s) done that a couple of times this year. He’s just a tremendous athlete.”
But the home run brought the most satisfaction. “I like hitting the ball, and I’ve never been a power hitter before this year,” Olson said. “We’re all hitting the ball. We did in the section tournament, and we were feeling it again today.”
Olson, Roddy Gentzkow and Meiklejohn finished with a pair of hits for LaMoure. Gentzkow, Meiklejohn, Brady Thielges and Brady Warcken each scored three runs.
Enderlin 13, Burlington 0 (5)
If it’s a win, it’s a shutout. That’s been Enderlin’s pattern of late.
The Railcats handed Burlington a 13-0 setback here Wednesday in the opening round of the North Dakota Class B American Legion baseball tournament. Winning pitcher Daniel Lindgren allowed just two hits in his complete game, which was called after five innings by the 10-run rule.
Enderlin improved to 4-2 in its last six games — a run in which the Railcats didn’t allow a run in any of the four victories.
“Our pitching has been pretty consistent,’’ Enderlin coach Kevin Bratland said. “We’ve been able to put numerous people out there and get quality performances, whether it’s been Daniel, Wyatt Aberle, Spencer Gillund or Adam Stenson.’’
Thompson 5, Nelson County 1
Skyler Carlson needed a little help, after all.
The Thompson pitcher dominated for six innings here Wednesday. Then Brandon Walsh came in to get the final three outs as Thompson beat Nelson County 5-1 in the opening round of the North Dakota Class B American Legion baseball tournament.
In Carlson’s six innings, the left-hander registered 14 of the 18 outs with strikeouts.
“When he’s on, that’s what Skyler is capable of doing,’’ Thompson coach Brady Schwab said. “He had velocity and was able to throw strikes. He’s had games like this before, but not with that many strikeouts. That’s a big number for six innings.’’
Ten of Nelson County’s first 11 outs were on strikeouts; the one that wasn’t was catcher Ryne Dolleslager throwing out a would-be basestealer. Carlson had three strikeouts in three innings and struck out a pair in two other innings. He also assisted on another putout.
