Letter to the editor: Showing forgiveness is an act of strength
As I was driving north on First Avenue past the Arts Park, I noticed a sapling in the park broken in half, completely doubled over about halfway up the trunk. I immediately imagined someone had broken it in half. My immediate reaction was anger, and I said a couple curse words to myself.
The truth is I don’t know how the tree came to be broken in half.
Aggression is an act of weakness. Anger is a feeling of weakness. Responding to aggression with anger perpetuates the cycle of weakness. Forgiveness is an act of strength. Strength will overcome weakness, if chosen.
It comes down to a choice.
If the tree were broken in half in an act of aggression, I choose to respond with forgiveness — slowing a cycle of weakness and beginning a cycle of strength.
