Man arrested after woman shot in the head

HAYWARD, Wis. -- A woman was in critical condition after being shot in the head, and the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office said her boyfriend apparently was the shooter.

The incident was reported to 911 shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday in the Town of Round Lake.

According to the sheriff’s office, Kerry Stevenson, 52, of Winnifield, La., walked into Ray Jay’s Restaurant screaming and with blood on his clothing.

Staff said it had seen Stevenson in the restaurant earlier in the evening with his girlfriend, a 48-year-old woman from Tonawanda, N.Y.

According to officers, Stevenson told them he had discharged a handgun in or near his truck and that his girlfriend was shot at Treeland’s Resort off County Highway B.

The woman was located and transported to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to her head. She was in critical condition.

Stevenson was taken into custody at the restaurant and was being held at the Sawyer County Jail on a court-ordered $1 million cash bond. He was formally charged with reckless injury with a handgun and felony possession of a firearm.

The victim’s name had not yet been released.
